Blow Out
It's not every day that I am blessed with an Alexander McQueen campaign spread. Lindsey Wixson stays sationery while Monarch Butterflies sail past. New designer Sarah Burton is certainly staying true to McQueen, as Monarchs are a signature of his. They are a tribute to his first patron and late best friend, Isabella Blow.
Also, I've been reading a classic by Patrick Dennis, Auntie Mame. It's about a fabulous woman in the 1920s and 30s. She is a character as much as her clothes are. It's also a movie and play but I haven't seen those yet...the books always better, yes? Check it out!

New Leader
BREAKING NEWS! And, I feel as if I can breathe a bit easier - a new Creative Director has been chosen for Alexander McQueen's house, and it isn't a designer from outside his company! It is Sarah Burton, a designer who has worked for McQueen for sixteen years. Burton now has some big shoes to fill as she takes the position of McQueen's new creative director immediately. Like McQueen, Burton attended Central St. Martin's design school and began working for McQueen's label in 1996, a year before her own graduation. She has stayed with the brand ever since, and was named the Womenswear director in 2000 and was also the lucky gal who received credit for finishing McQueen's last F/W 2010 collection.
She has said, “The creation of modern, beautifully crafted clothes was at the heart of Lee’s vision. I intend to stay true to his legacy.”
Over all, I think it is a great decision. Many industry heads (and even my instructors) have discussed the path that could lead with McQueen's house since his suicide in February. But, Burton has spent sixteen years working for the designer, and I really want to trust and believe that she can carry on his legacy and style in a strong way and form. Gucci group has not announced when her first collection will debut, but I'm sure it won't be too long.

Alexander McQueen F/W 2010 Private Collection
Yes, images have been leaked. And yes, they made me cry. The impeccable tailoring. The absolutely stunning, beautiful, history-infused prints. The silhouettes. The colors. The boots. The man. LONG LIVE MCQUEEN. (And, the infusion of Lacroix?!)
Thank you for the images, Vain and Vapid!

Betsey Johnson Honors McQueen
The final look at Betsey Johnson's F/W 2010 show was a great dedication to the late designer. A model, adorned with enlarged red wax lips (I'm assuming to imitate McQueen's F/W 2009 collection) walked down the hay-scattered runway with a small bouquet of red roses and a sign that said, "LONG LIVE MCQUEEN!"
Also seen: faux mustaches.
Love you, babe!

We had to be there
Nothing defines McQueen's penchant for complicated drama like this clip from 2005
It's so tense for the girls! You can see them getting into it, thank god for those lights.

Long Live McQueen
It is still difficult for me to write an entry about the death of one of my all-time favorite fashion designers, Alexander McQueen. In fact, I neglected writing it until late tonight because I am still a bit in shock from hearing the news this morning, and still don't want to accept that he's gone.
I first discovered McQueen around the age fifteen, the same age that I first really became interested in fashion and viewing runway collections. His S/S 2005 show amazed me, from the innovation of his designs, the direction of the show, and the interaction between Lily Donaldson and Gemma Ward. In 2007, I visited NYC for the first time and viewed an exhibit loaded with McQueen originals at the MET. There, I saw my favorite piece (adorned by Gemma in the show). I stood and stared in amazement at the beauty and perfection of this dress. It scooped, scalloped, and wove around in a bubble on the thighs. It is a moment I will never forget. And, from that moment, he always made me feel like anything was possible with fashion.
Since then, McQueen has always been unstoppable to me. Each show he presented us with was original and with a new theme than the previous collections. He truly was a visionary. I quote what one of my instructors said today, "If you don't get moved by McQueen, you don't love fashion."
Now, we can celebrate his life and what he gave us, as individuals, small fashion communities, and the entire industry. Lee, thank you for your beautifully proportioned gowns, holograms of Kate Moss, gorgeous set design, and abstract headpieces. Thank you for your bold, fresh, and inspiring textiles, and your lovely beadwork. Thank you for your MAC collaboration and the fantastic new ideas you provided us with in the makeup looks from each collection. Thank you for something emotional, deep, and and purely elegant.
RIP Alexander McQueen.
Industry sends regards for McQueen @ Fashionologie
Love,
The Ram
PS: What I learned today: 1. Designers, (even your favorite ones) are not immortal. and 2. Fashion has more emotion in it than you think.
(Now, of course, a photo montage...)

Thank You, McQueen
This is exactly what I wanted - a KA-POW presentation from one of mall-time favorite designers, Alexander McQueen. The show took place last night at 8:15pm in Paris, and the live stream was supposed to be available this morning in the United States. So, I woke up, excited as a kid on Christmas morning, only to find that SHOWstudio had crashed. You know why? Thirty minutes before McQueen's show began, Lady Gaga tweeted that her new song, Bad Romance, would be premiering at the show. After this statement, there was reportedly one million followers of McQueen's vid. Aye.
Fortunately, hours later, I found myself excitedly viewing Plato's Atlantis by Alexander McQueen. And let's just say, McQueen really stuck to his theme. Everything from the beginning of the show to the end was resembled the beauty of underwater life, evolution, and the aquatic. And, it moved me to tears.
We first start the collection with mini dresses in crocodile/fish/reptile patterns, swirled and geometrically spun into each other. Warm yellows, oranges, browns, and deep greens quickly morph into groups of copper with browns and greens, then into beautiful nudes and blues, with jellyfish shapes and more. The beauty was creative and fresh, with giant corn rows braided into each model's head, pushing out in the form of clam shells or ram's horns. Later in the show, the braids were joined by whisps of curly, bleached hair, in resemblance of sea foam that washes ashore.
Besides the incredible patterns, and AMAZING soundtrack (I am obsessed with the authenticity in the scuba breathing/whale/dolphin sound section), I think the star of the show was the shoes. McQueen presented crab claws (with no models falling!), industrial metal detailing, and Ursula-esque squiggly heels.
I say, the Nina Ricci boot of fall has been replaced. And we will see the crab claw heel in every photoshoot until next March. Yup.
Magdalena opens. Fierce as ever.

McQueen's Turn
Alexander McQueen's S/S 2010 collection, "Plato's Atlantis", airs on his website tomorrow at 8:15pm (French time). He has been tweeting nonstop, announcing how stressful the preparations for this year's Spring show have been.
His show will be directed by SHOWstudio genius Nick Knight, with cuts of pre-recorded footage by McQueen and Raquel Zimmermann.
I cannot wait to see the fruits of his labor.
